Street Legal Motorcycle Club ® Membership Requirements

The criteria below, from the Bylaws of the Club, specify the requirements for Club Membership. If you have questions concerning Membership, please Contact Us.

The Board of Directors may exercise discretion to admit as the members of the Club individuals that are either licensed to drive motorcycles or own or ride a licensed motorcycle and either currently or prior to retirement or change of employment, meet the requirements of Road Lawyers, Street Legal Members, or Associate Members. No individual shall be denied membership based upon race, creed, religion, belief system, political belief, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, sexual preference, marital status, familial status, veteran status, disability, or any other class of persons protected by Minnesota State or the Federal laws or regulations which protect persons against discrimination.

Road Lawyers are those individuals that hold, in good standing, the professional academic degree of Juris Doctor (JD), or its prior equivalent Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or its foreign equivalent (as determined by the Board of Directors). This category of members has the right to bear all of the Club colors, including, exclusively, the designation of “Road Lawyer.”

Street Legal Members are individuals that, as determined by the Board of Directors are bona fide: law students; paralegals, secretaries, investigators, or other permanent employees of a law firm (whether full or part-time); employees of a legal department of a corporation or other business; bonding agents; judges, court reporters, bailiffs, or other employees of any court or other law-related division of state or local government or political subdivisions; or a business which is engaged in the practice of law as commonly attributed to the legal profession and is carrying out the activities of the practice of law under the direction or supervision of a licensed attorney. The individual’s occupational relationship to the legal profession must substantially support their membership as ‘Street Legal Members.’

Associate Members are any individual that does not meet the requirements of Road Lawyer or Street Legal Member but is a spouse, domestic partner, adult child, or regular passenger of a Road Lawyer or Street Legal Member.

All categories of members pay such dues as may be determined from time to time by the Board of Directors.

Individuals formerly licensed to practice law that have been disbarred in any state, province, or country, and individuals licensed to practice law that are currently suspended from practicing law in one or more jurisdictions, are ineligible for admission as members. Membership of any member may also be terminated for failure to pay dues, failure to remain qualified for membership, for violation of the Bylaws, or where the Board determines the member’s conduct may cause substantial risk of harm to the purposes, reputation, and personal safety of the Club and its members.

Before being awarded membership, an individual shall be subject to a prospecting period of up to one year, during which such prospecting member must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Board of Directors that they possess motorcycle riding skills sufficient to ride safely with the Club. A prospecting member must also attend and participate in a minimum of three Club events, including at least one Club ride, to familiarize him or herself with the other members and the nature and operations of the Club.

Decisions about all memberships are at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Members may reside in locales other than the State of Minnesota, United States. However, the Club may also entertain applications for charters for all states in the United States and other provinces or equivalent geographic units in other countries. Charter (license) requirements will be provided only to lawyers seriously interested in starting, funding, and operating a chapter as an ongoing concern. Among other things, charters require that a minimum of three (3) lawyers form a non-profit domestic corporation with Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws approved by SLMC MN. Final approval will also require personal, face-to-face meetings with the Minnesota President, Vice President, and Board of Directors.
